The Geologist is in charge of studying natural formations and the earth’s processes to promote environmental conservation or safe land development. His/Her duties include going into the field and collecting mineral samples, creating maps of geographical features and testing a rock formation’s natural engineering to prepare for construction.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigates the structure and evolution of the earth and its natural resources
- Plans geology projects (e.g. oil extraction, water pipe construction) and field sampling events
- Studies the relationship between an organization’s projects, and its environmental impact and sustainability.
- Evaluates and explore the planet and its natural resources
- Surveys sites and create logs (e.g. borehole) and maps using GIS
- Plans programmes for exploration of sites for oil, gas, water, minerals, etc
- Measures seismic, volcanic, electromagnetic and gravitational activities
- Makes land process predictions based on previous earthquakes, volcanoes, floods and tornadoes
Job Requirements/Qualifications
- Degree in geology or geoscience, Environmental science or related fields
- Proven work experience as a Geologist for more than 5 years
- Experience using geology software (e.g. ArcGIS, Rockware) and other data and modeling tools (e.g. Adobe Illustrator, GoCAD)
- Excellent knowledge of geology and geological factors of the specified location
- Practical experience in collecting and analyzing geological information such as water, soil and rock data
Skills needed for this role
The Geologist must have knowledge of a range of sciences and their applications. He/She must have the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team of scientists and engineers. Having good knowledge of the attributes of ores, soil, minerals and other materials and the ability to handle and analyze data and 3D models are essential for this role.
