School Counselors support the social, emotional and academic well-being of students. They collaborate with school and school district staff to help students succeed in all aspects of their lives. This can be helping students through social and emotional challenges or liaising with other agencies and organizations outside the school.
Key Responsibilities
- Develops, implements and manages school guidance programs
- Evaluates students’ abilities and interests through aptitude assessments, interviews, and individual planning
- Collaborates with teaching staff to determine how best to meet individual students’ needs
- Ensures equitable access to opportunities and rigorous curriculum for all students
- Advises and counsels students regarding academic, educational, and short-term social and emotional problems.
- Helps students understand and overcome social or behavioral problems through classroom guidance lessons and counseling
- Work with school faculty and staff to develop plans for maintaining the well-being of individual students and of the student population as a whole
Job Requirements/Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education and other related programs, Master’s Degree in Counseling/Guidance, Education, or Social Work is preferred
- Working knowledge of various counseling models, practices and resources
- Relevant experience as a school counselor
- Understanding and familiarity with computer applications and word processing functions
- familiarity with online learning platforms
Skills needed for this role
The School Counselor must have the desire and ability to work with students at the specified age level with diverse backgrounds and levels of ability toward accomplishing their educational goals. He/She must have the ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet many and varied deadlines and communicate effectively with students, parents, school administrators and other staff, including the ability to discuss topics which may be sensitive.
