The Personal Care Attendant provides non-medical care for patients in their homes. This includes both completing domestic duties, helping the patient with self-care and hygiene and filling the role of companion for the patients, who are typically elderly and live alone.
Key Responsibilities
- Cares for clients with physical, emotional, or cognitive (e.g., Alzheimer’s) impairments
- Prepares all meals for their patient according to any dietary needs and restrictions.
- Provides support, encouragement, and companionship by engaging clients in activities, such as playing games, visiting places, taking walks, or having conversations
- Assists with feeding, depending on the condition of their patient
- Handles household chores for clients, such as laundry, dishes, changing sheets, and other basic cleaning
- Provides immobile, recovering, or frail clients with support, company, and comfort.
- Understands nutritive restrictions patients may have
- Arranges or provides transportation to appointments, supermarkets, etc.
- Dispenses medications, administering treatments, and assisting with exercise routines as prescribed.
- Provides emotional and psychological support
- Assists clients in and out of bed, excluding the use of mechanical lifting equipment
Job Requirements/Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- National Caregiver Certification Course (NCCC) preferred.
- Proven previous work experience as a Personal Care Assistant or related jobs
- Extensive experience in assisting clients with mobility and personal hygiene.
Skills needed for this role
The Personal Care Attendant must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. He/She must be compassionate in order to connect with the patients and provide them with a companion in addition to someone who takes care of their home. He/She must have outstanding patient management skills and must have a compassionate and friendly personality.
