Camera operators are employed by television and cable companies, film production companies and video production houses. They are responsible for operating a variety of technical equipment including single and multiple portable cameras, remote-control and electronic cameras, cranes and mobile mountings.
Key Responsibilities
- Frames camera shots for live studio or field productions as directed
- Works with directors to determine all aspects of shots
- Knows and applies the technical aspects of lenses, film, filters, light and camera settings to each shot to ensure the director gets the effect he or she wants.
- Arranges cameras and examine angles to achieve the best shooting outcomes
- Remains updated on new technology and current industry trends to ensure you bring the latest methods to the job.
- Prepares cameras and test angles or camera movements
- Provides creative input to scene planning and implementation
- Practices the camera moves required for pre-arranged shots
- Follows shoot schedules and call sheets
- Assists with camera work for documentaries or independent films
- Resolves technical or practical issues
- Executes editing activities
Job Requirements/Qualifications:
- High school diploma; Degree in Film, Media or relevant field is a plus
- Previous working experience as camera operator for 3 years
- Excellent theoretical knowledge of filming and capturing footage
- Physical strength to carry heavy equipment and stamina
- Experience operating relevant equipment (cameras, cranes etc.)
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Skills needed for this role
The Camera Operator must have a strong understanding of the technical aspects of filmmaking. He/She should have a strong creative streak. Excellent hand-eye coordination is typically another requirement for this job. The ability to communicate is another much-needed skill for camera operators, as filmmaking is usually achieved through a team approach.
