Photo Editor

The Photo Editor works for a website, newspaper, magazine or book publisher. He/she is responsible for selecting, editing, positioning and publishing photos to accompany the text of a publication. He/She also supervises staff photographers, gives photo assignments and makes sure that others complete their work on time.

Key Responsibilities

  • Consults with the editorial team and brainstorms creative concepts.
  • Coordinates photography assignments and allocating projects to in-house photographers.
  • Hires specialist photographers and negotiating fees, if relevant.
  • Obtains rights to photographs, as well as permission to shoot at designated locations, when required.
  • Selects photographs that complement the text in the way envisaged by the editorial team.
  • Edits and artfully positions photographs to accompany texts.
  • Submits photographic designs for approval in a timely manner.
  • Obtains feedback from editorial teams and makes relevant changes, when required.
  • Keeps track of industry trends and advancements in the field of photographic editing.

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in photography, visual arts, digital media or similar relevant field
Excellent and extensive portfolio
In-depth knowledge of computer imaging and studio management

Skills needed for this role

Photo Editor Position must have excellent organizational and time management skills. He/She must have outstanding communication and presentation skills and the ability to proofread and edit pieces. Having good visual and photography skills are also a good advantage in this role.
