The Building Inspector ensures that construction meets local and national building codes and ordinances, zoning regulations, and contract specifications. He/She involves inspecting, not only building structures, but plumbing, electrical, sewage, and heating systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Reviews plans to ensure they meet building codes, local ordinances, zoning regulations, and contract specifications
- Approves building plans that are satisfactory
- Monitors construction sites periodically to ensure overall compliance
- Uses survey instruments, metering devices, and test equipment to perform inspections
- Inspects plumbing, electrical, and other systems to ensure that they meet code
- Verifies alignment, level, and elevation of structures to ensure building meets specifications
- Issues violation notices and stop-work orders until building is compliant
- Keeps daily logs, including photographs taken during inspections
- Provides written documentation of findings
Job Requirements/Qualifications
- High school Diploma or GED is required
- Able to move physically and is physically active
- Proven experience as a Building Inspector of more than 2 years
- Trained on a variety of computer programs, including spreadsheets and MS Office
- Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction
Skills needed for this role
The Building Inspector must have a strong grasp of construction and materials science, attention to detail, good communication and problem-solving skills. He/She must see in the normal visual range with or without correction, vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and can visually inspect work in progress.
