The Estimator is responsible for attempting to figure out how much a project will cost. He/She identifies every single cost that goes into a project. He/She also helps the sales team create a proposal, tracking the costs of a project, understanding customer specifications, and proposing a final budget for a project.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyzes plans, bills of quantities and other project documentation in order to estimate costs
- Researches, sources, negotiates and obtains the best prices and quotes from suppliers and subcontractors
- Analyzes data that can affect costs (such as currency exchange rates and the company’s productivity rates)
- Assesses the financial, technical and operational risks of the project
- Visits project sites to gather information
- Stays aware of the latest construction technologies
- Keeps up to date with the latest regulatory and legislative requirements
- Inputs into decisions over whether to bid for the project
- Works closely with key members of the project team and liaising with clients and suppliers
- Keeps detailed records and writes reports
Job Requirements/Qualifications
- BA in engineering, construction science or similar relevant field
- Familiarity with computer programs such as Timberline or HCSS HeavyBid
- Good understanding of data analysis methods
- Hands-on experience with complex data research activities
- In-depth knowledge of project management
- Outstanding mathematics and IT abilities
Skills needed for this role
The Estimator must have good interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal. He/She must have critical thinking, analytical, organizational, and time management skills. Being proficient in relevant software including MS Office Suite is also essential for this role.
