Reporter

The Reporter gathers and analyzes information about current events and writes stories for publication or for broadcasting. He/She must pitch story ideas to the TV station’s news director. He/She specializes in one type of reporting such as crime, arts and entertainment, sports, education, or technology.

Key Responsibilities

Receives assignments or evaluates news leads and news tips to develop story ideas.
Gathers and verifies factual information regarding story through interview, observation, and research.
Organizes material, determines slant or emphasis, and writes story according to prescribed editorial style and format standards.
Monitors police and fire department radio communications to obtain story leads.
Takes photographs or shoot videos to illustrate stories.
Edits, or assists in editing, videos and/or audios for broadcast.
Delivers live reports from the site of the event or mobile broadcast unit, as appropriate.
Produces and anchors news and public affairs programs.
Compiles and incorporates supplemental material and background information from a range of sources, such as files, reference libraries, and/or individual knowledgeable sources

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED is needed
Bachelor’s degrees in communications, journalism or radio/TV/film is preferred
In depth knowledge of journalism principles and techniques
Thorough knowledge of editorial and ethical standards for the research and development of journalistic articles and/or presentations.

Skills needed for this role

The Reporter must have good writing and speaking skills, excellent networking skills with a database of contacts, and great interpersonal and organizational skills. Having good communications skills both oral and written is also essential for this role.
