The Costume Designer plans, creates, and maintains clothing and accessories for all characters in a stage, film, television, dance, or opera production. He/She fits each character, and either creates a new garment or alters an existing costume. Costume designers may also be known as theatrical designers.
Key Responsibilities
- Reads the full script, marking and making notes on areas that will affect costume
- Meets with the director to discuss his or her feelings on the plot, characters, period and style, time frame for the production, and budget.
- Works closely with the producer and director to enhance the production’s quality.
- Sketches clothing ideas and chooses appropriate fabrics and colors.
- Examines script in details in order to understand costume requirements
- Creates ideas for costumes and assign the production work to wardrobe supervisors
- Plans a rough costume plot, which is a list of costume changes by scene for each character.
- Styles garments such as sportswear, casual wear, outerwear, maternity wear, formal wear, and intimate apparel
Job Requirements/Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in costume design, fashion design, or similar preferred.
- Proven work experience as a Costume Designer
- Understanding of a range of styles and cultural/historical elements
- Good knowledge of design principles, techniques, and translation styles.
Skills needed for this role
The Costume Designer must have the ability to design and sew patterns for a variety of garments and work under pressure and meet strict deadlines. He/She must have strong written and verbal communication skills. Having the ability to have strong attention to detail and collaboration skills.
