News Producer

The News Producer may work in several different media, including print, radio, television and online news. He/She primarily oversees both the editorial content of the news and how that news is produced and presented to the public. Job duties include writing news stories, selecting footage to include in broadcasts and reviewing sound-bytes in order to ensure smooth composition and flow of the news.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitors news feeds, including searching social media and engaging with reporters, to gather and evaluate relevant news and information
  • Gathers information, stories and pieces from team members throughout the day
  • Collaborates with news director to select and prioritize content
  • Adds stories and elements that will make the broadcast more attractive
  • Selects footage and sound bites to include in broadcast to ensure consistency
  • Liaises with the production team to keep technical standards high
  • Communicates with the studio crew and anchors while on-air
  • Coordinates with and supports management and all production staff to maintain editorial standards for newsgathering and coverage on broadcast and cable platforms.
  • Ensures the accuracy and timeliness of on-air content
  • Produces breaking news reports
  • Coordinates with creative department to develop promotion strategies for upcoming newscasts
  • Performs research on local, national and international affairs to stay updated with current events

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication, Journalism or related field
  • Thorough understanding of sound systems, camera operation, and music editing
  • Extensive know-how of the news production process
  • Sound know-how of latest technologies
  • Ability to efficiently perform under pressure
  • Should be willing to work in shifts

Skills needed for this role

The News Producer must have excellent editing and proofreading skills. He/She must have outstanding communication, organizational and time management skills and the ability to proofread and edit pieces. Having good communications skills and the ability to execute good news about current events are also essential for this role.
